Boris Johnson has announced that he will be campaigning for the UK to leave the European Union - and has used his Telegraph column to describe June's referendum as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity".

He ignored a last-minute appeal made by David Cameron on TV - and notified the Prime Minister of his decision just nine minutes before facing the press outside his north London home.
